Elegant, Sophisticated, Bitter, Classic...The Negroni

The Negroni is among one of the worlds most famous cocktails. The drinks origins date back to the early 20th century.

As lore tells, Italian Count, Camillo Negroni, left his native Italian homeland in search for excitment. He came to the new world to adventure and explore. Some say he became a riverboat gambler, others say a banker, and some even recall him being a cowoby during the exploration growth of the Wild Wild West.

Upon Negroni's return to his native Florance region years later, Count Negroni, stepped into the Bar Casino and ordered an Americano Cocktail, sweet vermouth, Campari, and club soda. This time though, like his adventerous lifestyle, Count Negroni was seeking something a little bit more ambitious and asked the barkeep to swap out the club soda for Gin. Thus, the Negroni was born.

The Negroni is known as an Italian Aperitif, (a cocktail that is ment to be sipped on before a meal to stimulate one's apatite) and is made of three simple ingrediants. Gin, Campari, and Sweet Vermouth. If you have never tasted Campari before, boy are you in for a suprise. Talk about bitter...

The Negroni is definately not a cocktail for everyone. Infact, it had to grow on me for the longest time. The first time I ever tasted Campari, I almost spat it out. It is sooooo bitter. I almost suggest one working up to this cocktail by substituting the Campari out for a much less bitter but somewhat sweater liquore equivilant called Aperol.

The Negroni is actually quite a simple and easy cocktail to create. Order this out at a bar and you will most definately impress your sexy date, a boss or the bartender. It is comprised of equal parts Gin, Sweet Vermouth, and Campari. At first sip you will probably be take back by how bitter it is. But, as you keep coming back to it, it gets better with each sip. It is almost an impossible cocktail to mess up since it is comprised of equal parts in sprits insuring you that you will get a great drink wherever and whenever you order it.

How I make my Negroni:

1.5 oz of a good quality Gin

1.5 oz of Sweet Vermouth

1.5 oz of Campari (or substitue Aperol if needed)

Stir over ice

Strain into an Old-Fashion glass with a chunk of ice

Garnish with a slice of an Orange

*This drink can also be served straight up in a coup depending on preference
